PURPOSE: We are seeking a dedicated and motivated Medical Assistant Extern to join our team for a short-term placement of 4 to 10 weeks. As a Medical Assistant Extern, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a clinical setting, assisting healthcare professionals and contributing to the overall patient care process. This externship offers valuable learning opportunities to enhance your medical knowledge and practical skills while working under the guidance of experienced medical staff.

 

OBJECTIVE: The Medical Assistant Externship position leverages theoretical knowledge and practical skills gained from coursework, aiming to provide comprehensive support in a clinical setting. Eager to contribute to patient care, learn from experienced professionals, and apply classroom learning to real-world scenarios while delivering compassionate and efficient healthcare services. 

 

Medical Assistant Extern will rotate within each area: Adult Health, Adolescent Health, Pediatric Health, and Reproductive Health while with People’s Community Clinic.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Under the supervision of the Medical Assistant Supervisor when rotating through each area, this individual’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Observe and assist the Medical Assistant in performing clinical duties, such as taking vital signs, recording medical histories, and preparing patients for exams.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment by following infection control procedures and regulations.
  • Observe and assist the Medical Assistant in performing administrative duties, such as scheduling appointments, answering phones, and maintaining patient records.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure smooth patient flow and efficient clinic operations.
  • Learn and follow clinic policies and procedures to ensure high-quality patient care.
  • Assist with patient education by providing information on medications, procedures, and post-care instructions.
  • Participate in relevant training and educational sessions offered during the externship period.
  • Take initiative to learn from medical professionals and actively seek opportunities for skill development.
  • Attend and participate in educational opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills.

Qualifications

Education:  Currently enrolled in one of our affiliated Medical Assistant School Programs and in the section of the course that requires completion of 120 – 180 hours of clinical experience.

  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Willingness to learn and follow instructions.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information.

 

 

Duration and Compensation: This externship is expected to last up to 10 weeks with 20 to 40 hours per week. While this is an unpaid externship, it offers valuable hands-on experience, networking opportunities, and the chance to make a meaningful impact on the community.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Hearing: Adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone.
  • Speaking: Must be able to communicate clearly with patients in person and over the telephone.
  • Vision: Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including reading information from printed sources and computer screens.
  • Other: Requires occasional lifting and carrying items weighing up to 20 pounds unassisted. Requires frequent bending, reaching, and repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting and sitting, with some lifting, pushing and pulling exerted throughout the regular workday.
