Eligibility for Dental Assistant Extern Role: Please note that the Dental Assistant Extern role is exclusively for students of the College of Healthcare Professions (CHCP).

 

We are seeking a dedicated and motivated Dental Assistant Extern to join our team for a short-term placement of 3 to 10 weeks. As a Dental Assistant Extern, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a clinical setting, assisting dental professionals, and contributing to the overall patient care process. This externship offers valuable learning opportunities to enhance your dental knowledge and practical skills while working under the guidance of experienced dental staff.

 

To provide an enthusiastic and dedicated Dental Assistant Extern with the opportunity to gain practical experience in the dental field within the context of a federally qualified healthcare center and nonprofit organization. The objective of this externship is to foster the extern's professional growth by immersing them in various dental assisting functions and empowering them to contribute to the organization's mission of providing quality dental healthcare services to underserved communities.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Dental Services Director, this individual’s primary responsibilities include:


• Assist healthcare professionals in patient care activities, including taking vital signs, recording patient history, and preparing examination rooms.
• Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring the availability of necessary supplies and equipment.
• Escort patients to examination rooms and prepare them for medical procedures.
• Support patient intake processes, including verifying patient information, insurance details, and medical records.
• Perform basic administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, answering phones, and managing patient records.
• Collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure smooth patient flow and efficient clinic operations.
• Provide support during medical procedures and treatments as directed by medical staff.
• Follow infection control protocols and always maintain patient confidentiality.
• Assist with patient education by providing information on medications, procedures, and post-care instructions.
• Participate in relevant training and educational sessions offered during the externship period.
• Learn and adhere to the ethical and professional standards of medical practice.
• Take initiative to learn from medical professionals and actively seek opportunities for skill development.

Qualifications

Currently enrolled in a dental assistance program from an accredited affiliate school/program of People’s Community Clinic.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to communicate and interact professionally with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
• Demonstrated flexibility and effective self-management skills.


Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior exposure to or coursework related to dental assisting or a relevant field.
• Familiarity with dental assisting processes, such as patient care, sterilization, and dental equipment management.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Duration and Compensation: This externship is expected to last up to 10 weeks with 15 to 30 hours per week. While this is an unpaid externship, it offers valuable hands-on experience, networking opportunities, and the chance to make a meaningful impact on the community.
